Sometimes two people can be speaking the same language and still not understand each other. This is often the case when contracts are involved, since Legalese or Lawyer Speak is quickly becoming its own dialect. Almost everyone will come across a contract at some point, either in their business dealings or when they're buying Pickering townhouses for sale. We here at Translation People are dedicated to helping people understand each other, so here are some tips on how to understand your real estate contract.

Read it!

Many people take one look at the dense language used to describe the terms under which they're getting their condominium for rent in Toronto and give up, thinking they won't be able to understand it, so why bother? You should always read every word of a contract before you sign anything. Once you get into the flow of legalese, you may be surprised by how much you can understand. The basic concepts of "I will do" and "I won't do" are still there, and these are the parts you need to know because they tell you what you're agreeing to.

Ask Questions

Don't worry if you don't understand everything in the contract. It doesn't mean you're stupid. It just means that you don't have years of training and experience in dealing with Toronto real estate for sale. Smart people know their own limitations and aren't afraid to ask the experts for help. So if there's anything you're not sure of (for example, a requirement about your financing), ask your realtor or your real estate lawyer to explain it to you. Never agree to something if you don't understand what it means.

Contingencies and Clauses

The contract, where you agree to exchange a certain amount of money with the seller for the right to own their Oshawa, Ontario real estate, is the easy part to understand. More difficult is the web of clauses and contingencies that you or the other party have programmed into the contract to help you get out of it if something goes wrong. Some common contingencies include: you don't have to buy the house if the inspection turns up problems, and they don't have to give you the house if you can't find someone to give you a mortgage.

You Can Counter

If you come across a part of the contract that you really don't like, such as if the builder of a new Toronto condos and lofts complex doesn't offer any concrete date for the completion of your unit, you need to get your lawyer to rewrite the contract according to your terms and have your realtor send it over. They may not accept it, but at least you tried to get terms that were favorable to you.
